DETROIT, Mich.— DTE Energy and Consumers Energy announced on September 22, 2020, that they pledge to make interstate travel easier for electric vehicle (EV) owners by 2022. These two companies have partnered with utilities across the Midwest to construct a network of fast charging stations for EVs from Michigan to Kansas.

Among those energy providers partnering with DTE Energy and Consumers Energy is Ameren Illinois, which services 1.2 million homes in central and southern Illinois.

A study conducted by Edison Electric Group in 2018 projects that there may be as many as 20 million electric behicles on the road by 2030. However, many in the automotive industry believe that the lack of convenient fast charging stations is holding many Midwestern vehicle shoppers back from purchasing EVs.

“DTE has a significant role to play in helping make EVs a viable option for many,” said DTE Electric President Trevor Lauer. “This pledge, along with the rebates we offer for electric vehicle chargers installed at homes and businesses, shows DTE is committed to a future of more environmentally-friendly transportation.”

Additional companies and utilities have expressed interest in joining the collaborative efford across the Midwest, but the construction of the network will be subject to regulatory approval in each region.
